MFA required for off-campus access to library resources starting May 18

As of May 18th, MFA (multi-factor authentication) will be required when signing on to access online library resources (databases, articles, ebooks, etc.) from off-campus.  This change is part of the University IT’s updated sign-on security requirements.

Any links to online library resources in reading lists, D2L or tools like EndNote do not have to be updated.

Session & video: Introduction to Open Educational Resources

This short introductory session will provide a brief introduction to Open Educational Resources (OERs): what they are, how they can help meet your teaching and learning goals, and how they can benefit students. The session will also outline supports and resources at the University of Calgary for instructors who are seeking OERs that are appropriate for their classes. After this brief introduction, we'll open the floor to participants, so please come with any questions you have about integrating open resources into your classroom.

Journal Citation Reports are available!

It takes six months to compile, but Clarivate's Journal Citation Reports (JCR) 2021 edition is out.

What's new for 2021?

Expanded journal coverage

This year's release includes expanded coverage of the journal literature to reflect the full breadth of research covered in all the journals in the Web of Science Core Collection™ – including journals covered in the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI)™ and the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI)™.

A new metric

The Journal Citation Indicator is a field-normalized measurement of journal citation impact, providing a single journal-level metric that can be easily interpreted and compared across disciplines. It has been calculated for all journals in the Web of Science Core Collection – including those that do not have a Journal Impact Factor™.

A new visual experience

New graphics improve the user experience with simpler, more direct searching while providing a deeper look into the data – for example, a view of how a journal’s metrics have evolved over time.

Update on Open Access Discounts for UCalgary authors

  • Elsevier. University of Calgary-affiliated authors are eligible for a 20% discount on Article Processing Charges (APCs) for both hybrid and gold open access journals starting January 2021 (i.e., articles submitted on or after January 1, 2021). Cell Press, Lancet and some other society-owned journals are excluded.
  • SAGE. We are participating in two Open Access programs with SAGE:
    • A "read and publish" deal with most "hybrid" open access journals (called SAGE Choice Journals) for the period 2021 to 2023. This allows University of Calgary authors publishing in all but 12 SAGE hybrid open access journals to publish papers open access at no cost to the individual.
    • A 40% discount on article publishing charges for select "gold" open access journals.
  • Taylor & Francis. 25% discount in T&F Open Select journals.

More details on these deals, including information on how to claim discounts, which journals are included/excluded, contact information, and more are available on the library's Scholarly Communication Guide, OA Publishing Discounts page.

Also new on the page is a helpful visual guide from SAGE on navigating their OA portal.
