The latest web version of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics is now online. (It is actually the web version of the 88th print edition.)
This new web edition has tables with five new topics:
* Properties of Ionic Liquids
* Solubilities of Hydrocarbons in Sea Water
* Solubility of Organic Compounds in Superheated Water
* Nutritive Value of Foods
* Properties of Organic Semiconductors
Seven of the most heavily used tables have been extensively revised and updated:
* Critical Constants
* Heats of Vaporization
* Aqueous Solubility of Organic Compounds
* Thermodynamic Properties of Air
* Dipole Moments of Molecules
* Bond Dissociation Energies
* Properties of Fundamental Particles
Ten more tables have been made interactive and are now searchable by name, formula, and numerical properties.
There are also two new sections:
* Tables that were previously removed from older print editions for reasons of space - Appendix B
* Subject index giving you the same easy browsability as the print - Section 20

Flash Animation of The Elements by Tom Lehrer
Okay, it's not Friday, but think of this as a mid-week pick-me-up. The link below takes you to a flash animation of the classic "The Elements" by Tom Lehrer. The animation needs a bit of an update as a few more elements have been added since, but it's still fun:

Students: MS Office Available at a Great Price
Microsoft has a new promotion geared toward UofC students. A student can purchase Office 2007 for as low as $22.00 (this is for a one-year license). If you are interested in this offer, go to:
http://www.ucalgary.ca/it/help/articles/2454
and follow the instructions (this page may be a bit slow to load, due to high traffic...keep trying.) The instructions will take you to the portal and, from there, to the Microsoft site. Because this is a student offering it is only under the student role in the portal. If you would like to check it out (outside of the portal) go to:
http://www.theultimatesteal.ca/
(U of Calgary is not listed on this site, but it accepted my @ucalgary.ca email address, so we're eligible.)

Chemistry Nobel Laureate Readings - from the American Institute of Physics Journals
The American Institute of Physics is highlighting articles published in their journals by Gerhard Ertl of the Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Berlin, Germany. Professor Ertl has been awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize for Chemistry "for his studies of chemical processes on solid surfaces."
AIP is pleased to make a selection of his seminal papers available for free at
http://journals.aip.org/NobelChem2007.html,
including the following:
Order-disorder phenomena in adsorbed layers described by a lattice gas model
G. Doyen, G. Ertl, and M. Plancher
J. Chem. Phys. 62, 2957 (1975)
Interactions between chemisorbed atoms: Oxygen on W(110)
G. Ertl and D. Schillinger
J. Chem. Phys. 66, 2569 (1977)
Semiempirical theory of chemisorption on narrow d-band metals
G. Doyen and G. Ertl
J. Chem. Phys. 68, 5417 (1978)
etc.
There are many more on the AIP site. At a certain point, you get to the end of the free articles. If you want to read those and aren't connecting from on campus, go through this link:
